• At the age of 20, Buddhadasa became a monk and began his studies of the Dhamma and
the Pali language. He was inspired to live close to nature to devote himself to meditation, the
Buddha-Dhamma and studying the Buddhist scriptures
• In 1932, he established Suan Mokkhabalarama (The Garden of Liberation) to introduce
Buddhism to people in the nuclear age. His emphasis on the interdependence of all things
made him a champion of peace and ecological thought. His writings have had considerable
influence on the renewal of Buddhist thinking
• Buddhadasa is considered the most highly respected Thai Buddhist monk worldwide. His last
project, to establish an International Dhamma Hermitage Centre, aimed to provide courses on
the correct understanding of Buddhist principles, and a place to gather all religious leaders to
increase mutual understanding
