• Mao Zedong first encountered Communism as a young man, whilst he was working
as a library assistant at Peking University. He later became a Marxist and served in
the revolutionary army during the 1911 Chinese Revolution
• He co-founded the Chinese Communist Party in 1921 and in October 1949
established the People’s Republic of China and became Chairman
• In 1964, a collection of quotations from his speeches and writings were published
together in The Little Red Book. Every Chinese citizen had to own, read and carry it
at all times during his rule
