Facts about Konrad Adenauer
Konrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer was born in Cologne in 1876. He studied law and political science and was elected mayor of Cologne in 1917. During the National Socialist era, he lost his political offices and was briefly imprisoned.
From 1949 to 1963, he was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, the high point of his political career. Partly at the same time, he held the office of the first Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic, and that at the proud age of 73! Adenauer was also a co-founder of the CDU, of which he was party chairman from 1950 to 1966. Adenauer remained a member of the Bundestag until his death in 1967.
Away from politics, Adenauer also tried his hand as an inventor and managed to secure 3 patents. These include the so-called "Kölner Brot", a rye black bread made from rice/corn flour, Jerusalem artichokes and barley, and the "Kölner Wurst", a soy sausage dating from 1916.
