Hilda Ogden

Hilda Ogden is a beloved character from the British soap opera Coronation Street.

  • Hilda Ogden, played by Jean Alexander, was a central character on Coronation Street from 1964 to 1987. She became one of the show's most memorable characters due to her distinct personality, working-class background, and her often comic but relatable struggles in life.
  • Hilda was known for her distinctive appearance, which included her beehive hairstyle and her trademark headscarf, both of which became iconic symbols of her character. She also had a unique way of speaking, with a broad northern accent that added to her charm and relatability.

Jack & Vera Duckworth

Jack and Vera Duckworth, played by Bill Tarmey and Elizabeth Dawn, were one of Coronation Street's most iconic couples. Their relationship provided some of the most memorable and emotional moments in the show’s history, and their dynamic is still fondly remembered by fans.

  • Over their 30+ years on the show, they became one of the most iconic and enduring couples in soap opera history, known for their ups and downs, humour, and heartfelt moments.
  • The relationship between Jack and Vera was often turbulent, marked by Vera's fiery temper and Jack’s loveable, but often lazy, nature. Despite the frequent bickering, their deep love and devotion to each other were always evident, making them one of the most relatable and enduring couples in the show’s history.
  • Jack Duckworth's struggle with gambling was a significant storyline throughout their time on the show. His addiction created tension in their marriage, but it also added depth to their characters, as Vera's frustration with Jack's habits mixed with her moments of tenderness and loyalty towards him.

Ken and Deirdre Barlow

Ken Barlow, portrayed by William Roache, is a central character in Coronation Street.

  • Ken Barlow has been a fixture on Coronation Street since its inaugural episode on December 9, 1960. This remarkable tenure has earned actor William Roache a Guinness World Record for the longest-serving television star in a continuous role. ​
  • His character was at the heart of numerous significant storylines, such as the dramatic love triangle involving his wife Deirdre and rival Mike Baldwin, which captivated audiences and became a defining moment in British soap opera history.

 

Deirdre Barlow, portrayed by Anne Kirkbride, was a beloved character on Coronation Street.

  • Deirdre was renowned for her distinctive large glasses, which she wore without lenses in her early appearances. Over time, she switched to smaller frames. Her wardrobe often featured chain belts, and her signature dish was stuffed marrow filled with mince and couscous.
  • Throughout her time on the show, Deirdre experienced a tumultuous love life. She was married four times, twice to Ken Barlow. Their 1981 wedding attracted over 24 million viewers, surpassing the viewership of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer's wedding. Deirdre's relationships, including an affair with Mike Baldwin, were central to many gripping storylines. ​
  • Imprisonment Storyline and Public Impact: In 1998, Deirdre was wrongfully imprisoned for fraud, sparking a nationwide "Free the Weatherfield One" campaign.

Bet Lynch

  • Julie Goodyear played Bet Lynch, who first appeared on screen in 1966. 
  • Goodyear returned as a regular character in 1970 and left the show in 1995 after 25 years. 
  • Catherine Tyldesley who played Eva Price in Coronation Street paid a visit to Madame Tussauds Blackpool. She can be seen pictured with Bet Lynch's wax figure below.
