TV Greats

2

Dame Edna Everage

Dame Edna's character became a unique blend of satire, humour, and absurdity, cementing her as a beloved figure in comedy.

  • She is one of the most iconic Australian comedic characters, created by actor Barry Humphries. While Edna is often portrayed as a real person, she is entirely fictional. The character first appeared in the 1950s and has since become a staple of global comedy.
  • Dame Edna's signature look, complete with extravagant purple wigs, oversized glasses, and glamorous gowns, became instantly recognizable. The character’s bold fashion choices were a major part of her comedic appeal, often drawing attention to her "eccentric" personality.
  • In 2007, Barry Humphries was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II and made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for his contributions to drama and entertainment. This was an ironic twist, as Dame Edna, the character, had previously made fun of the concept of aristocracy!

  • Before becoming a household name, Alan Carr started his career in stand-up comedy. His 2006 stand-up show, Alan Carr: The Stand-Up Tour, was a big hit and helped establish him as a comedian with a unique voice, which later led to his TV success.
  • Carr has also worked in radio. He co-hosted The Saturday Show on BBC Radio 2 and later went on to have his own show, Alan Carr’s Specstacular.
  • One of Alan Carr’s trademarks is his signature laugh, which is infectious and instantly recognisable. It’s become an integral part of his comedic persona, often making his stand-up and talk show appearances even more memorable.

  • After co-authoring over 950 scientific publications and a string of best-selling books, including Human Universe and Universal, A Guide to the Cosmos, Professor Cox was thrust into the limelight making physics accessible to the masses.

Professor Brian Cox OBE on the sitting process:

"The sitting process is surprising because it's so high precision, every possible measurement is made. It's a combination of very old techniques that go all the way back to the 19th century, making very high precision measurements of the head and the body but also 21st century techniques; digital scanning techniques, and they all overlap and interlock."
