Traditions and Customs

Many traditions and customs exist for each Lunar New Year. Here are a few! 

• Before the festival even begins the house is fully cleaned and swept - to sweep away any back luck and make room for the good luck to come. Red decorations are adorned, including lanterns, paper cuttings and Chinese knots.

• On New Year's Eve, families get together for a feast, which is often considered the most important meal of the year, traditional dishes such as dumplings (Represent Wealth), fish (Represent Abundance) and rice cakes (for rising prosperity).

• Elders then give red envelopes filled with money to children and younger relatives, the envelopes are a symbol of blessing, good fortune, and happiness.
