To get the most from your Sydney visit, just think WDLD: What Do Locals Do? Here are some ‘insider’ ideas to uncover the real Sydney experience.

High Times

In Sydney, you don’t have to be a ‘someone’ to live the high life. Just head to one of the city’s rooftops for amazing views. Cafe Sydney overlooks Circular Quay, while the less swanky Glenmore Hotel in The Rocks overlooks the Sydney Opera House. To look down over everything, go 250 metres up Sydney Tower. The observation deck has 360-degree views across the entire city, and beyond to the Blue Mountains.

Local Roast

Coffee. Brew. Jitter Juice. To drink coffee like a local, keep it as straight as possible. Asking for a caramel latte with cream on top will earn you a raised eyebrow from the barista. Stick to the basics, and you can’t go wrong. You’ll find the best cafes in Sydney’s inner suburbs like Surry Hills, Balmain and Redfern. Expect great coffee and fresh, tasty food. Heard the joke about Sydney-siders unable to afford a house deposit because they spend too much on avocado toast? Try ‘smashed avo’ in any of the cafes, and you’ll understand why we’re willing to risk our mortgages for this tasty morsel!

Local Idols

Madame Tussauds Sydney features a stack of home-grown heroes and international icons, rendered perfectly in wax. Every detail is hand-crafted by sculptors, in a process which takes months to complete. In Sydney, it’s all about who you know – so go ahead and share stories of who you ‘met’ in the city! Nicole KidmanHugh JackmanRebel WilsonElle Macpherson, and of course, Steve Irwin. Crikey, it’s a social media dream! Don’t forget to hashtag #TussaudsSydney – it’s what a local would do!

Move it or Lose It!

From gym junkies to yoga mummies, there’s activewear every direction you look. Sunrise at our beaches and parks is heralded by the shouts and grunts of boot camp groups. If you’re wondering what to do in Sydney today, try beating your personal best on the clifftop pathway between Bondi and Coogee. Or, adopt a more leisurely pace and soak up that ocean view. In winter you might spot a whale, and in summer, you can reward your efforts with a dip in the deep blue sea.

Hey Ho, it’s Off to Work We Go

However you get to work, we guarantee it’s not as much fun as the ferry! Each day, workers board the charming green and gold ferries for the most scenic commute in the world; passing all the iconic landmarks, gleaming in the morning sunshine. Regular commuters tell tales of things seen from onboard: seals, penguins, and a baby whale swimming past the Sydney Opera House! Of course, if you want to meet penguins and sharks close up, catch the Darling Harbour ferry to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium!

For a truly unforgettable experience – when in Sydney, do as the locals do.
