- Leopold Figl grew up in the country – his father was a winegrower, he studied agriculture at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna, and went on to become chairman of the Lower Austrian Farmer's League in 1933.
- In 1938 he was deported to the Dachau concentration camp. Although released in 1943 he was rearrested and taken to Mauthausen concentration camp in 1944. In February 1945 he was sentenced to death for high treason, but the end of the war arrived before the execution could be carried out.
- He signed the state treaty on behalf of Austria followed by the famous words “Austria is free!”
