Who Was Madame Tussaud?
Marie Tussaud was the French-born artist and founder of Madame Tussauds wax museum in London. Born in France in 1761, Madame Tussaud spent her early career learning the art of wax modeling from doctor and anatomist Phillipe Curtius.
She gained popularity from her wax portraits of 18th-century ‘celebrities’, including founding father Benjamin Franklin, philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and poet Sir Walter Scott. She even had an association with the royal family and was the tutor to King Louis XVI’s sister, Élisabeth.
In 1789, Marie fled to the United Kingdom with her three children due to the French Revolution. Around the same time, her mentor Phillipe Curtius died, leaving her with his entire exhibition, relics, artifacts, and portfolio of property.
She finally settled in the UK and opened the first official Madame Tussauds wax museum on London’s Baker Street in 1835. She worked right up to her death in 1850, and some of her original models, including wax figures of Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, and Sir Walter Scott, still exist and are preserved today.
