Behind the Scenes with Steven Chung: The Reopening of Images of Singapore

Singapore is a city rich in history, culture, and innovation, and one of the most immersive ways to experience its past is through Images of Singapore museum at Madame Tussauds Singapore at Sentosa. After an exciting revamp, the beloved attraction is reopening, and we had the privilege of speaking with Madame Tussauds’ General Manager, Steven Chung, to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the transformation.

1. What can visitors expect from the revamped Images of Singapore experience?

Steven Chung: We’ve reimagined Images of Singapore to be more interactive, engaging, and visually stunning than ever before. Visitors can look forward to new multimedia elements, refreshed themed sets, and an enhanced storytelling approach that brings Singapore’s history to life in a more immersive way. We’ve also introduced AI digital human features that allow guests to engage with historical figures like never before. This presents a unique learning journey experience for families and students alike!

2. What was the most challenging aspect of redesigning the attraction?

Steven Chung: One of the biggest challenges was balancing historical accuracy with modern engagement techniques. We wanted to ensure that we remained true to Singapore’s rich heritage while also making the experience fresh and exciting for today’s visitors. Sourcing historical facts, recreating detailed set designs, and integrating new technology while keeping the heart of the original exhibit intact was a meticulous yet rewarding process.

3. How did your team approach blending technology with tradition?

Steven Chung: Technology is a powerful tool for storytelling, but we wanted to ensure it complemented rather than overshadowed the historical narratives. Our team used cutting-edge projection mapping, interactive touchpoints, and audio-visual storytelling to enhance the experience without losing the essence of Singapore’s past. We also collaborated with local historians to ensure every element remained authentic and respectful of our culture.

4. Is there anything different that will be included in the new Images of Singapore?

Steven Chung: We’re thrilled to introduce a new digital experience – using AI digital humans who will engage guests directly and answer any questions you may have of Singapore’s history. The digital humans are modelled after 4 figures from our history – Sir Stamford Raffles, Ah Mei the Samsui woman, Pillai the Chettiar money lender and Rahman the Malay regiment soldier. We have also included multi-touch interactive screens offer a wealth of information, allowing you to learn more about Singapore's iconic locations and their unique stories.

5. What do you hope visitors will take away from this experience?

Steven Chung: We hope visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for Singapore’s remarkable journey—from a humble fishing village to the vibrant metropolis it is today. Especially with 2025 being the year of SG60 celebrations, we want guests to feel a sense of connection to the people and events that shaped this nation. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local, Images of Singapore offers something meaningful for everyone.

With its grand reopening scheduled for 15 March 2025, the new Images of Singapore promises an unforgettable journey through time, blending history with cutting-edge experiences. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this remarkable experience at Madame Tussauds Singapore!
