- Yusof Ishak Secondary School, which was opened by then prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew on 29 July 1966, is named in his honour.
- Before becoming the president, he worked as a journalist and then founded Malay newspaper Utusan Melayu. He aimed to educate the Malay community with information and his family had to pawn their jewellery to help him raise money.
- He left the Utusan Melayu to grow orchids, which was his hobby.
